About Listeria infections

Food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes may not look or smell spoiled but can still cause serious and sometimes life-threatening infections. Anyone who has eaten any recalled products and developed symptoms of Listeria infection should seek medical treatment and tell their doctors about the possible Listeria exposure.

Also, anyone who has eaten any of the recalled products should monitor themselves for symptoms during the coming weeks because it can take up to 70 days after exposure to Listeria for symptoms of listeriosis to develop.

Symptoms of Listeria infection can include vomiting, nausea, persistent fever, muscle aches, severe headache, and neck stiffness. Specific laboratory tests are required to diagnose Listeria infections, which can mimic other illnesses.

Pregnant women, the elderly, young children, and people such as cancer patients who have weakened immune systems are particularly at risk of serious illnesses, life-threatening infections, and other complications. Although infected pregnant women may experience only mild, flu-like symptoms, their infections can lead to premature delivery, infection of the newborn, or even stillbirth.

The FDA has issued a warning about oysters from a certain harvest area in Connecticut that were distributed to other states. Testing has shown the oysters to be contaminated.

The warning and related recall posted today by the Food and Drug Administration did not indicate a specific contaminant.

Restaurants and food retailers in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York, Pennsylvania and Virginia that have recently purchased raw oysters from Groton Approved area in Connecticut harvested from Aug. 28 through Aug. 30 should not sell the oysters.

The oysters were directly distributed to retailers and distributors in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York, Pennsylvania and Virginia. The oysters may have been distributed further from these states.

The implicated oysters are from Groton Approved area in Connecticut harvested by dealers CT-393-SS, AQ, CT-004-SS, AQ, and CT-020-SS, AQ with lots, L-30 and L-26B1.

On Aug. 31 the Connecticut Department of Agriculture, Bureau of Aquaculture initiated an emergency precautionary closure of two approved harvest areas and a recall of the implicated oysters because sample results showed potential contamination.

All impacted commercial harvesters agreed to recall the implicated oysters. The affected harvest area will remain closed until the source of contamination is identified and corrected, and the CT Department of Agriculture has collected acceptable sample results to reopen the area.

Contaminated oysters can cause illness, especially if eaten raw, particularly in people with compromised immune systems. Food contaminated with pathogens may look, smell, and taste normal. Consumers of these products who are experiencing food poisoning symptoms such as diarrhea, stomach pain or cramps, nausea, vomiting, or fever should contact their healthcare provider, who should report their symptoms to their local health department.

Mid America Pet Food of  Mount Pleasant, TX, is recalling one lot of Victor Super Premium Dog Food, Hi-Pro Plus because of potential Salmonella contamination.

This voluntary recall is being issued because a sample of Victor Super Premium Dog Food tested positive for Salmonella in a random sample test conducted by the South Carolina Department of Agriculture.

The recalled dog food was produced at its Mount Pleasant, TX production facility.

Salmonella can affect animals eating the product and there is a risk to humans, notably children, the elderly, and the immunocompromised, when handling contaminated products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or surfaces exposed to these products.

Dogs with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some dogs will have only decreased appetite, fever, and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy dogs can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your dog has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.

Recalled product:

  • The affected product was only sold in 5-pound bags.
  • Products were distributed to various distributors and retailers in the United States.
  • The affected product consists of 644 cases sold in 5-pound bags with lot code 1000016385 with Best By Date 4/30/2024.
  • Lot code information is found on the back of the bag.

As of the posting of this recall, no human or pet illnesses have been reported.

Retailers and distributors should immediately pull the recalled lot from their inventory and shelves. Recalled products should not be sold or donated.

The recalled product should not be fed to pets or any other animals. It should be destroyed in a way that children, pets and wildlife cannot access. Pet food bowls, cups and storage containers should be washed and sanitized. Pet owners should always ensure they wash and sanitize their hands after handling recalled food or any utensils that come in contact with recalled food.

About Salmonella infections

Food contaminated with Salmonella bacteria does not usually look, smell, or taste spoiled. Anyone can become sick with a Salmonella infection. Infants, children, seniors, and people with weakened immune systems are at higher risk of serious illness because their immune systems are fragile, according to the CDC.

Anyone who has used any of the recalled products and developed symptoms of Salmonella infection should seek medical attention. Sick people should tell their doctors about the possible exposure to Salmonella bacteria because special tests are necessary to diagnose salmonellosis. Salmonella infection symptoms can mimic other illnesses, frequently leading to misdiagnosis.

Symptoms of Salmonella infection can include diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever within 12 to 72 hours after eating contaminated food. Otherwise, healthy adults are usually sick for four to seven days. In some cases, however, diarrhea may be so severe that patients require hospitalization.

Older adults, children, pregnant women, and people with weakened immune systems, such as cancer patients, are more likely to develop a severe illness and serious, sometimes life-threatening conditions.

Some people get infected without getting sick or showing any symptoms. However, they may still spread the infections to others.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency tested mussel meats on Aug. 21 and found the contamination, according to the FDA’s warning posted this afternoon. The Canadian agency informed the FDA of the testing results on Aug. 23.

Canadian officials are continuing their investigation. The FDA is awaiting further information on the distribution of the mussels and will continue to monitor the investigation and provide assistance to state authorities as needed.

Freezing does not kill the bacteria.

Restaurants and food retailers in Illinois, Massachusetts, and New York that have recently purchased cultured mussels from East River Shellfish Inc. based in Glenfinnan, Prince Edward Island, Canada, should not sell and should dispose of the mussels.

The mussels subject to the warning were harvested from harvest location PE 4-C on Aug. 14 and shipped on Aug. 15.

The symptoms of E. coli infections vary for each person but often include severe stomach cramps and diarrhea, which is often bloody. Some patients may also have a fever. Most patients recover within five to seven days. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), others can develop severe or life-threatening symptoms and complications.

Consumers who have recently consumed cultured mussels from East River Shellfish Inc. in Illinois, Massachusetts, or New York should immediately contact their medical providers if they develop Salmonella or E. coli infection symptoms. Symptoms are outlined below.

Many people with HUS recover within a few weeks, but some suffer permanent injuries or death. This condition can occur among people of any age but is most common in children younger than five years old because of their immature immune systems, older adults because of deteriorating immune systems, and people with compromised immune systems such as cancer patients.

People who experience HUS symptoms should immediately seek emergency medical care. People with HUS will likely be hospitalized because the condition can cause other serious and ongoing problems such as hypertension, chronic kidney disease, brain damage, and neurologic problems.

About E. coli infections
Anyone who has eaten any of the implicated mussels and developed symptoms of E. coli infection should seek medical attention and tell their doctor about their possible exposure to the bacteria. Specific tests are required to diagnose the infections, which can mimic other illnesses.

About 5 to 10 percent of those diagnosed with E. coli infections develop a potentially life-threatening kidney failure complication known as a hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). Symptoms of HUS include fever, abdominal pain, tiredness, decreased frequency of urination, small unexplained bruises or bleeding, and pallor.

Anyone who has eaten any of the implicated mussels and developed symptoms of Salmonella infection should seek medical attention. Sick people should tell their doctors about the possible exposure to Salmonella bacteria because special tests are necessary to diagnose salmonellosis. Salmonella infection symptoms can mimic other illnesses, frequently leading to misdiagnosis.

About Salmonella infections
Food contaminated with Salmonella bacteria does not usually look, smell, or taste spoiled. Anyone can become sick with a Salmonella infection. According to the CDC, infants, children, seniors, and people with weakened immune systems are at higher risk of serious illness because their immune systems are fragile.

Some people get infected without getting sick or showing any symptoms. However, they may still spread the infections to others.

Older adults, children, pregnant women, and people with weakened immune systems, such as cancer patients, are more likely to develop severe illness and serious, sometimes life-threatening conditions.

The Ice Cream House voluntarily recalls all dairy ice cream products and non-dairy (Parve) frozen dessert products because of potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.

The recalled products were sold at the Ice Cream House in Brooklyn, NY, and through retail supermarkets in New York, New Jersey, and Ohio, according to the company’s recall notice posted by the Food and Drug Administration this afternoon.

This recall is related to the soft serve On The Go cups previously recalled by Real Kosher Ice Cream Inc., where two cases of illnesses have been reported in this outbreak in New York and Pennsylvania. Both individuals were hospitalized, but no deaths have been reported to date.

Consumers can use the following information to identify the recalled products:

The company has ceased producing and distributing the products as the investigation is ongoing.

The newly recalled products include all Ice Cream House branded items currently on the market. This includes all dairy and non-dairy (Parve) products, like ice creams, cakes, logs, and novelty items with the “Ice Cream House” logo. Products are packed in clamshells or cake trays with plastic dome covers in various sizes and styles and have an Ice Cream House label, as seen above. Recalled products are not labeled with lot or date codes.

About Listeria infections

Food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes may not look or smell spoiled but can still cause serious and sometimes life-threatening infections. Anyone who has eaten any recalledproducts and developed symptoms of Listeria infection should seek medical treatment and tell their doctors about the possible Listeria exposure.

Dean & Peeler Meatworks, LLC, of Poth, TX, is recalling approximately 1,835 pounds of fresh ground beef products that may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS)

The issue was reported to FSIS after the ground beef product was submitted to a third-party laboratory for microbiological analysis and the sample tested presumptive positive for E. coli O157:H7.

The fresh ground beef products were produced on Aug. 22, 2023.

FSIS is concerned that some product may be in restaurant refrigerators or freezers.

These items were shipped to restaurant locations in the greater San Antonio, TX area.

Recalled products:

  • 1-lb., 5-lb., and 10-lb. vacuum-sealed plastic bags containing “Peeler Farms WAGYU BEEF GROUND BEEF” with lot code 17836 represented on the label.
  • 5-lb. vacuum-sealed plastic bags containing “R-C RANCH TEXAS CRAFT MEATS WAGYU RC13610 STEAKHOUSE BLEND – GROUND BEEF 5 lb” with lot code 17816 represented on the label.

As of the posting of this recall, there have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products.

Restaurants are urged not to serve these products. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.

About E. coli infections
Anyone who has eaten any of the implicated products and developed symptoms of E. coli infection should seek medical attention and tell their doctor about their possible food poisoning. Specific tests are required to diagnose the infections, which can mimic other illnesses.

The symptoms of E. coli infections vary for each person but often include severe stomach cramps and diarrhea, which is often bloody. Some patients may also have a fever. Most patients recover within five to seven days. Others can develop severe or life-threatening symptoms and complications, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

About 5 to 10 percent of those diagnosed with E. coli infections develop a potentially life-threatening kidney failure complication, known as a hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). Symptoms of HUS include fever, abdominal pain, feeling very tired, decreased frequency of urination, small unexplained bruises or bleeding, and pallor.

Twin City Foods Inc. of Stanwood, WA, is recalling not-ready-to eat frozen corn and mixed vegetables in retail bags, because of a potential for them to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

The affected brands are Kroger, Food Lion and Signature. Food Lion previously posted its own recall of frozen mixed vegetables and frozen sweet corn products because of contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.

There is concern that consumers may have the recalled frozen vegetables in their homes because of the products’ long shelf life.

To date, there have been no actual consumer reports of human illness associated with this products according to the recall notice supplied to the Food and Drug Administration by Twin City Foods Inc.

“The recall has been initiated because finished products may potentially be contaminated with the Listeria monocytogenes, based on one customer’s third- party lab results for the IQF (individually quick frozen) sweet cut corn,” according to the recall notice.

Consumers can use the following information to determine whether they have the recalled products in their homes:

New York officials warn the public not to consume raw milk from Remembrance Farm because testing has found contamination from Listeria monocytogenes.

Richard Ball, the state Department of Agriculture and Markets commissioner, warned yesterday against Nathaniel Thompson doing business as Remembrance Farm. The farm is in Trumansburg in Tompkins County.

An inspector collected a sample of the farm’s milk, and testing showed Listeria monocytogenes contamination. The producer was notified of the test result on Aug. 11. Additional tests on Aug. 15 further confirmed the contamination from Listeria monocytogenes.

“The producer is now prohibited from selling raw milk until subsequent sampling indicates that the product is free of harmful bacteria.,” according to a notice from the department of agriculture.

The public is warned to not consume any raw milk from the farm and immediately dispose of it. Consumers who have the milk are asked to call the farm at 310-804-7240.

“It is important to note that raw milk does not provide the protection of pasteurization. Pasteurization is a process that heats milk to a specific temperature for a specific amount of time,” according to the agriculture department’s warning.

“Pasteurization kills the bacteria responsible for numerous illnesses and diseases such as listeriosis, salmonellosis, campylobacteriosis, typhoid fever, tuberculosis, diphtheria, and brucellosis. Pasteurization of milk is recognized internationally as an effective means of preventing outbreaks of foodborne illnesses, including listeriosis.”

Although infected pregnant women may experience only mild, flu-like symptoms, their infections can lead to premature delivery, infection of the newborn, or even stillbirth.

Anyone who has eaten any recalled fruit cups and developed symptoms of Listeria infection should seek medical treatment and tell their doctors about possible Listeria exposure.

Anyone who has eaten recalled products should monitor themselves for symptoms during the coming weeks because it can take up to 70 days after exposure to Listeria for symptoms of listeriosis to develop.

Symptoms of Listeria infection can include vomiting, nausea, persistent fever, muscle aches, severe headache, and neck stiffness. Specific laboratory tests are required to diagnose Listeria infections, which can mimic other illnesses.

Blue Triton, of Zephyrhills, FL, is recalling more than 300,000 cases of their 1964 Zephyrhills 100% Natural Spring Water because of Bromate in the finished product that exceeds the MCL of 10ppb.

The allowable level established by FDA for bromate in bottled water is 0.010 milligram per liter.

According to the New York State Department of Health, Bromate is formed when ozone used to disinfect drinking water reacts with naturally occurring bromide found in source water. Exposure to large amounts of bromate for a long period of time caused kidney effects in laboratory animals. Long-term exposure to high levels of bromate has also caused cancer in rats. Whether bromate can cause cancer in people is not known.

Some people may be at greater risk for developing health effects from bromate exposure or have concerns for their pregnancy or nursing infant. Because bromate can cause health effects in kidneys, it is possible that those with pre-existing kidney conditions could be at greater risk. The information on the effects of bromate on reproductive health is limited but does not indicate concern at levels near the drinking water standard.

According to the details posted online by the FDA, the recall was initiated on July 14, 2023, and is ongoing.

The recalled products were distributed domestically in the U.S.

About E. coli infections

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a cautionary advisory to consumers, urging them not to feed their pets specific lots of raw cat food and dog food produced by Arrow Reliance Inc.’s brand, Darwin’s Natural Pet Products. The agency’s move comes after samples from the affected lots tested positive for Salmonella contamination.

The FDA’s advisory was spurred by the potentially severe health implications these contaminated pet food lots can cause for both animals and humans. Salmonella infections can lead to serious illness, especially in individuals with weakened immune systems, the elderly, and young children. Since the affected products are typically stored frozen, the FDA is particularly worried that people might still have them and unwittingly feed them to their pets.

The FDA identified the potentially hazardous products as follows:

  • Darwin’s Natural Pet Products Natural Selections Chicken Recipe with Organic Vegetables for Dogs, Lot 9774, manufactured on June 13, 2023.
  • Darwin’s Natural Pet Products Natural Selections Chicken Recipe for Cats, Lot 9795, manufactured on June 28, 2023.
  • Darwin’s Natural Pet Products Natural Selections Chicken Recipe for Cats, Lot 9830, manufactured on July 19, 2023.

Both the cat and dog food are packaged in white and clear plastic wrapping. The dog food has blue labeling, while the cat food bears blue and green labeling. Each package weighs two pounds and contains four separate units. Lot codes are printed on the front of the lower left unit of the package.

The advisory stresses that if any of the listed lots from Darwin’s Natural Pet Products are in possession, pet owners should discard them immediately and avoid feeding them to their pets. The FDA’s concern is centered on the significant health risk that these specific lots of pet food pose to both animals and humans.

The FDA strongly advised Arrow Reliance Inc. to initiate a voluntary recall and publicly notify consumers of the issue, but the company has yet to take these steps.

History of Issues with Arrow Reliance Inc. and Darwin’s Natural Pet Products

This is not the first time Arrow Reliance Inc., operating under the brand Darwin’s Natural Pet Products, has faced issues related to the safety of its pet food products. On August 5, 2022, the FDA issued a similar advisory after product samples from certain lots of Darwin’s Natural Pet Products raw cat food were found to be tainted with Salmonella.

The FDA also sent a Feb. 16 warning letter, describing an Aug. 23 through Sept. 30, 2022 inspection of Arrow Reliance Inc.’s pet food manufacturing facility in Tukwila, WA.

The FDA’s inspection revealed that the firm was not in compliance with FDA regulations because of adulterated animal food, including finished products with Salmonella.

FDA recommendations

For consumers who have these products at home, the FDA has recommended disposing of them in a secure container, where other animals cannot access them. Additionally, thorough cleaning and disinfection of surfaces that may have been exposed to the contaminated products, as well as diligent handwashing, are crucial steps to mitigate any potential health risks.

Pet owners are urged to check their supplies for the specified lots of Darwin’s Natural Pet Products and take immediate action if any of the affected items are present. Swift intervention can help prevent further spread of Salmonella and safeguard both pets and their human companions from potential harm. For any pet illness concerns related to these products, individuals are advised to reach out to veterinarians. Complaints can be reported to the FDA through their Safety Reporting Portal or by contacting their state’s FDA Consumer Complaint Coordinators.

The Food and Drug Administration has closed an investigation into an outbreak of infections from E. Coli O26 without having found the source of the pathogen.

The agency reports that the outbreak has ended with 13 patients having been identified. The FDA did not reveal any patient information, such as where the patients lived.

According to the agency’s most recent update, it first reported the outbreak to the public on July 26. The FDA initiated traceback efforts but did not report what food or foods were being traced as part of the investigation.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention did not post any information about the outbreak, as is the agency’s practice when a source of the pathogen is not found.

In other outbreak news, FDA has ended its investigation into an outbreak of infections from the microscopic Cyclospora parasite. According to the agency’s update yesterday the outbreak has ended with a patient count of 59, which is up from 55 a week ago.

For the Cyclospora outbreak, the FDA initiated traceback, sample testing and onsite inspections. However the agency did not report what food was being traced or what was being tested. The agency also did not report what location had been inspected. The FDA first reported the outbreak on July 26.

In an ongoing investigation of illnesses caused by Listeria monocytogenes the FDA confirmed an ice cream product is likely the cause of the infections. The agency first reported the outbreak on Aug. 9, before the source of the pathogen was known.

On Aug. 10 the FDA posted an advisory stating that the outbreak was linked “Soft Serve On The Go” ice cream cups produced by Real Kosher Ice Cream of Brooklyn, NY. Two people have been confirmed as outbreak patients and both have required hospitalization.

The ice cream was distributed to California, Colorado, Connecticut, Washington D.C., Delaware, Florida, Illinois, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia.

The ice cream has been recalled. For packaging codes and photos of the recalled products, click here.
